Correcting an invoice with an avoir

In short

An invoice that has been sent is never edited. To correct it you issue an avoir (credit note): a full one cancels the invoice, a partial one refunds part of it. That is the accounting rule, not a limit of the software.

The button: Raise a credit note, on the invoice concerned.

What you will not be able to do No changing a line, no changing an amount, no deleting an invoice that has been sent. The avoir is the only way — and the one your accountant expects: the invoice stays, with the document that corrects it beside it.

How to do it

  1. On the invoice, click Raise a credit note.
  2. Amount to credit, VAT included: leave the field empty to cancel the whole invoice, or type an amount to cancel only part of it. The Reason is optional.
  3. Click Raise the credit note. It starts as a draft. Check it, then issue it.

A full avoir moves the invoice to Cancelled and stops its reminders. A partial one reduces what is still owed. The avoirs of an invoice are listed on its page, in the Credit notes and linked documents card.

What the avoir carries

Its own number (prefix AV, which you can change in Settings → Documents), the reference of the invoice it corrects, and the amounts as negative figures. It carries no IBAN, no payment terms and no penalties: it is not a document anyone pays you for.

The most common mistake

"This credit note is not possible. If the deposit is already deducted by an issued balance invoice, correct the balance instead."

You are trying to cancel a facture d'acompte (deposit invoice) that the facture de solde (balance invoice) has already deducted. Canceling it would make the balance wrong. Correct the balance instead: it carries the final count.

Refunding

Devivolt does not make the transfer. The avoir is the accounting document; the refund happens through your usual means.
